“We are the only species of mammal that doubts our inability to give birth. It’s profitable to scare women about birth. But let’s stop it. I tell women: your body is not a lemon.” -Ina May Gaskin

Evidence Shows That Having a Doula During Birth…

reduces complications, cesarean sections and other interventions

In two separate studies—an updated Cochran review (Bohren, et al, 2017) and a multi-clinical trial study (Klaus, et al, 2002)—researchers found that doulas can have a significant impact on the birth process in the following ways:

  • decrease in epidural/analgesia requests

  • decrease in cesarean sections

  • decrease in birthing durations

  • decrease in use of synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin)

  • decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute APGAR score

  • increase in spontaneous vaginal birth

  • increase in mothers rating childbirth as a positive experience

increases breastfeeding and improves bonding

Doula care during the sensitive period has the potential to alter later maternal behavior and the health of babies. Doulas can help keep mothers and newborns together as much as possible immediately after birth. Skin-on-skin contact and assistance with initial latch can improve breastfeeding success. One study (Wolman) showed the most impressive outcome: women who had doula care experienced 47% less problems with feeding than those without doulas. Mothers who had support during birthing were also more ready to form an attachment to their baby than those without doula care.

IMPROVES EMOTIONAL STATE OF MOTHERS

In one study (Wolman), women were split into two groups: doula-group and no-doula-group mothers. The doula-group showed significantly less anxiety, fewer signs of depression, and higher level of self-esteem at six weeks postpartum. The no-doula-group mothers were more likely to seek medical advice or treatment for increased anxiety, more depression, and low self-esteem. The fact that more of the doula-supported mothers in the study were breastfeeding may account for some of the differences.
