Post Office Play Station
This Post Office Play Station is inspired by Casey and Kurtis from Little Life Long Learners. The set of digital printables is available on their website for a little over $3 (USD) and it comes with letters, labels, signs, and pretty much everything you need to get started.
Up until now, I’ve strictly followed a Montessori approach of educating my 2-year-old. Dr. Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori Theory, discovered that children tend to prefer reality over pretend play.
As I previously mentioned in my Snack Station Tutorial, children under the age of six or seven learn the most effectively with tangible experiences from what they can see, touch, smell, and feel.
However, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, believed that dramatic play strengthens a child’s power of memory, comprehension, and imagination.
Since this post office dramatic play stems from a real-life experience (not fantasy), I decided to it was okay to include this into Dakota’s curriculum.
I wanted to incorporate a realistic aspect to this play station, so instead of using the fake stamps included in the printables set, Dakota helped me purchase real stamps from the post office. We also bought Valentine’s Day cards and stickers from Michael’s.
I setup the post office the night prior. For the fake mailbox, I glued red construction paper on an old box (red wrapping paper would’ve been much easier) and cut out a mail slot with an xacto knife.
The next morning, Dakota baked Raspberry Quinoa Muffins and I made Raspberry Linzer Cookies—no play date is complete without a treat tray!
We spent a good chunk of the day creating heartfelt cards to be sent out to friends and family. After Dakota tossed the cards into the fake mailbox, I took them out and wrote addresses on them. Then, we dropped them off at a real mailbox.
